Governance is commonly defined as the way a country makes and implements its decisions. PDP supports good governance initiatives by providing policy and technical advice that strengthen government institutions and promote transparency and accountability. We do this by helping governments increase their capacity to tackle corruption, sustain spending programs, address social and economic priorities and uphold the rule of law. By building the capacity of government institutions and strengthening the oversight of public sector performance, we assist governments to improve their quality of governance in the critical areas of:
- machinery of government and the effectiveness of the link between organs of state
- capacity and quality of performance of oversight and scrutiny agencies
- quality and penetration of regulatory institutions
- level of wider civil society engagement with government.
We build capacity to prepare and implement:
- reform of machinery and processes of governments in transition and former centrally-planned economies, or those at post-conflict reconstruction stages
- civil society participation and the quality and sustainability of engagement of the government and civil society actors
- diagnostics of financial accountability processes and systems affecting the public and private sector
- financial integrity systems for financial intelligence units, central banks and bank and non-bank entities
- design and implementation of mandates for anti-corruption agencies, including legal and regulatory regimes, prevention and control strategies and enforcement.
