Trade & Investment

Economies in the world market have become increasingly integrated through global mobility of capital, liberalisation of trade and the implementation of international trade agreements. Sound domestic and international trade and investment policy is a key instrument in promoting development and enables countries to harness and consolidate the benefits of the global economy. We work with developing and transition country governments, regional secretariats, international aid agencies, the private sector and community based organisations (CBOs) to develop poverty-focused trade and investment policies and to mainstream them into wider development policy. We focus on helping to incorporate institutional strengthening which increases the capacity of trade and investment related bodies to design and implement appropriate policy.

Areas in which PDP assists include:
  • WTO compliance and admission strategies
  • negotiation support
  • regional and bilateral preferential trade agreements (PTAs) and customs unions
  • export and investment promotion
  • trade facilitation, impacts on economic growth, government revenue, employment, poverty and social indices
  • capacity building
  • tariff and non-tariff protection
  • comparative advantage analysis.
